What a Dental Bridge Is and How It Works
A dental bridge is a fixed prosthetic device that replaces one or more missing teeth by anchoring to the natural teeth on either side of the gap. The anchoring teeth, called abutments, are fitted with crowns, and the artificial tooth or teeth, called pontics, are suspended between them. The result is a seamless restoration that looks and functions like natural teeth. Unlike removable dentures, a bridge is permanently cemented in place and does not need to be taken out for cleaning or sleeping. It becomes a stable, integrated part of the dental arch, allowing patients to eat, speak, and smile without the inconvenience of a removable appliance.
Types of Dental Bridges
Traditional Bridges
Traditional bridges are the most common type and involve placing crowns on the teeth adjacent to the gap with a pontic between them. They are durable, effective, and suitable for most patients who have healthy natural teeth on both sides of the missing tooth.
Cantilever Bridges
A cantilever bridge anchors to a natural tooth on only one side of the gap. This option is used when there is only one adjacent tooth available for support. Cantilever bridges are less common and are best suited for areas with lighter chewing forces.
Implant-Supported Bridges
When multiple adjacent teeth are missing, dental implants can serve as the anchoring supports for a bridge instead of natural teeth. Implant-supported bridges preserve the health of surrounding natural teeth because they do not require adjacent teeth to be modified. This option provides the greatest stability and longevity.

Fitting and Cementation

Dental bridges typically last 10 to 15 years with proper care, and some last even longer.
